Pic de Casamanya

Pic de Casamanya (2740 meter) is situated in the heart of Andorra right between Ordino and Encamp. I’ve hiked Pic de Casamanya quite a few times. First of all because it’s quite close to the village where we live (Ordino) and second because it’s quite an accessible peak to hike. Depending from where you start it’s not a very long hike. That makes a hike to Pic de Casamanya a great experience for those who want to go to a beautiful peak but don’t want to be hiking a full day. That’s not to say that hiking Pic de Casamanya is an easy feat. It’s definitely not and there are some very steep parts and a false peak before actually arriving at the summit.

Hiking to Pic de Casamaya

The easiest way of hiking Pic de Casamanya is to start at Coll d’Ordino. You can park your car for free at the parking place at Coll d’Ordino. From there you will see a wooden sign on the side of the street that indicates Pic de Casamanya. From here the hike starts.

The hike starts with a beautiful forrest trails but gradually moves into open space whilst the trail is going upwards and goes above the treeline.

The trail gets quite steep the closer you get to the summit. Although there are many switchbacks to conquer the elevations it’s not an easy climb. From Coll d’Ordino you will climb approximately 710 meters in only 3.8k. The suggested time from Coll d’Ordino to Pic de Casamanya is 2:20 hours. A trained hiker will most likely do this well within 1:30 hours but this is not a trail to rush through. Don’t forget to take a moment every now and then to catch your breath again and enjoy the amazing views!

Whilst you’re hiking towards Pic de Casamanya you will see a first peak. Don’t be fooled to think that is the top because it’s not. Manage your energy. You will know what I mean when you get there. After that first peak you will see a second peak and that’s not the the top either! However soon after the second peak the real summit at 2740 is just a few meters away. The summit is very easily recognizable with the official iron marker and the pile of rocks.

One thing to keep in mind is that you will not cross any rivers when you start the hike to Pic de Casamanya from Coll d’Ordino so make sure to bring enough water. If you do the long loop that starts in Ordino you will cross a small river in the beginning and at roughly one third of the trail. However, afterwards there will be no natural water points.

Best time to hike to Pic de Casamanya

The best time to hike to Pic de Casamanya is from mid June to mid September. Earlier or later is also possible but that will depend on the snow and the weather. You don’t want to hike to Pic de Casamanya when the peak is covered in snow or when there is a lot of wind or rain. Always make sure to check the weather forecast before you start this hike!

Trail to Pic de Casamanya starting from Coll d’Ordino.

I always like to make a circular hike so on this trail I descent on the back of Pic de Casamanya to the left and later on turn left again. However, please note this this part is very technical. It’s very steep with loads of loose rocks. If you don’t like that I would suggest to take the same route back.

Starting from Ordino

I also made a longer version that starts in Ordino. You can park your car in the garage underneath the childrens playground. You can also try your luck at the free parking place towards Segudet. However, there are only a handful of parking places there and most of the time they are Occupied. Don’t park your car outside of the indicated parking places as you will get a fine!

This long hike will take you a full day but if you’re up to it it’s definitely worth it. The first part towards Coll d’Ordino is absolutely stunning and the descent from Pic de Casamanya towards Cortinada is worth it too.

Restaurant tips

If you’re taking the long hike that starts in Ordino you can start your hike with a morning coffee at Hors Categorie in Ordino. It’s also a great place to finish your hike. They have handmade cakes, delicious salads and local beer (Estrella Andorra) and wine.

Another great place to have a coffee, tea or sandwich is at Brulee. You will pass Brulee after you’ve descended to La Cortinada.
