Roc de la Cauba: A Spectacular Viewpoint Hike in La Massana, Andorra

Hidden in the parish of La Massana, the Roc de la Cauba is one of Andorra’s most impressive natural viewpoints. Perched at an altitude of approximately 1,818 meters, this dramatic rock formation offers a breathtaking panoramic “balcony view” over the villages of Erts and Arinsal and the stunning valleys that stretch out below.

The Route

I started the hike early in the morning from the parking lot of the CEO Sports Centre in Ordino. From here, I followed the historic Camí Ral to the trailhead, where this route connects with a nearby family-friendly hike. After a short stretch of road, I turned onto the Camí de la Cauba — passing a group of horses grazing along the way — and the climb began 🙂

It’s an impressive ascent that rewards you quickly, with sweeping views opening up almost immediately as you gain altitude fast. The morning sun warming the pine needles on the forest floor fills the air with a wonderful scent. The trail itself is varied and engaging, with rope sections, rocky formations, and narrow forest paths keeping things interesting throughout.

At a junction, a left turn leads you directly to the Roc de la Cauba. The rock itself is striking, jutting out over the landscape and offering beautiful views across La Massana and the valley towards Arinsal. The exposed summit features sheer drops on multiple sides. Take extra care with dogs and children or if you’re sensitive to heights.

Continuing to Arans

Heading back from the Roc, I followed the signs towards Coll de les Cases, tackling another solid climb along the way. The trail passes junctions for Ansalonga and La Cortinada before opening up onto a large plateau, where the old wooden signs (I love these!) of the Parc Natural Comunal Valls de Coma Pedrosa mark your arrival. From here, the route briefly joins the GR11 towards the Parròquia d’Ordino before the signs lead you down towards Arans.

What follows is a long, zigzagging descent through beautiful forest. Just before reaching the village, I was treated to a lovely surprise; a herd of horses grazing peacefully in the fields below. From Arans, I followed the road back to Ordino to complete the loop.

Trail & Nature Highlights

The area is rich in biodiversity and popular with locals for foraging wild berries and forest fruits. You’ll walk largely through the Bosc de Jou, a beautiful forest of Scots pines and hazel trees that feels peaceful and unspoiled throughout.

And a reassuring one: this route is exceptionally well marked with yellow blazes on the trees. Getting lost is nearly impossible. 😊

Tip

One practical note: bring enough water, especially when you bring dogs. The next river is only at the end of the hike near Arans.

Restaurant tips

After the hike it’s worth it to take walk to the centre of Ordino. Here you can find Hors Categorie (known for the best coffee and cakes), La Plaça (for a beer and tapas) or Topic.
